The Vermont State House, constructed between 1857 and 1859, is the third
such structure to be located on the site. The Executive Chamber, originally
completed in 1859, was extensively remodeled on several occasions during
the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
The
carpet was visible in a circa 1872 photograph, the earliest surviving
view of the chamber, and thus was original to the room. Following careful
analysis of the photograph, the elements of the carpet pattern were proportioned
based on room dimensions obtained at the site and the pattern recreated
in a line sketch and drawn to scale. A full size color rendering of the
pattern was prepared, from which the manufacturer created the point paper
and wove a sample piece. The firm steered the carpet through the manufacturing
process and oversaw installation.
