The Albany Law School and Albany Medical College proposed to construct
a jointly-operated residence hall for graduate students. The program called
for 140 single rooms and 28 double rooms arranged in suites around shared
living rooms. Common spaces anticipated for the building would include
lounge and dining facilities, recreation room, mail room, and caretaker's
apartment. The site was an undeveloped open field near the two schools.
In
1967, the architects (then Blatner·Mendel·Mesick Architects) began designs
for a nine-story building of reinforced, flat-slab concrete construction.
The exterior was enclosed with brick masonry highlighted by black slate
window sills and heads, and copings for parapet walls. Floors of interior
common spaces were finished with brick pavers, and work included complete
interior design and all furnishings. At the exterior, the encircling courtyards
were fully landscaped.
Construction was funded by the Dormitory Authority of the State of New
York.
