The Steuben Athletic Club

Address:
1 Steuben Place
Albany, NY

Owner: The Steuben Athletic Club, Inc.

The Steuben Athletic Club, a private downtown club, was incorporated into an adaptive use project of a late-19th century YMCA building into offices and athletic spaces. A major component of the club is a quality restaurant facility including a formal dining room, bar-lounge, and private dining rooms which are also available for public use. A totally new kitchen was designed to meet the requirements of the various types of food service provided by the club.

The design of the dining space, which seats approximately 60 persons, was inspired by landmark Keeler’s Restaurant, and features tiled floors, oak paneling, beveled mirrors, and furnishings based on historic photographs of the original restaurant. The bar-lounge is dominated by a long mahogany and mirrored bar and contains seating for approximately 50 diners. It was intended for the bar-lounge to be contemporary in character while at the same time compatible with the original building. Both the restaurant and the bar-lounge are designed to provide full-service lunches and dinners and to accommodate special events. As part of the dining facilities, two meeting rooms were included with full catering service from the main kitchen and a dedicated entrance for public accessibility.

In addition to the social and dining spaces, a full range of athletic spaces were designed including member locker rooms with steam rooms and saunas, swimming pool, a full nautilus room, exercise rooms, free-weight room, plus six handball courts and two squash courts.

As part of the interior renovation, totally new mechanical and electrical systems were provided to accommodate the specialized environmental requirements of the club.
