The original building in the Albany Law School complex, designed by the noted local firm of Fuller and Robertson, was constructed in 1929 in the "Collegiate Gothic" style. Two semicircular additions and a cloister were added in 1968, creating a courtyard behind the original building.

Since 1980, the firm has completed several projects necessitated by the school's expanded program and enlarged student body. A primary criteria for each has been compatibility with and respect for the historic character of existing structures, as well as the symmetry, massing, and circulation patterns of the complex.

The firm was commissioned first to participate in a feasibility study which developed a building program and determined alternative locations for a new library. As a result, a new three-story 53,000 square foot building was located in the open side of the existing courtyard. It also provided a new main entrance to the campus. Stack space for 250,000 volumes, carrels for 200 students, a media center, seminar and classrooms, technical services area, and support spaces were included in the building.
