This project began with an original cabin on a beautiful twenty-six acre site located in the Adirondack Mountains. The landscape is heavily-wooded hills, with the exception of a two acre clearing near the building. The cabin, built in the late 1920's, was constructed in the indigenous Adirondack style and consisted of a generous open living area anchored by a large stone fireplace, a master bedroom, a kitchen added in the 1960's, and a bathroom. All of the spaces featured exposed structural log bracing, which contributed to the rugged character of the interior. The owners' needs led to the construction of a 2,300 sq. ft. addition, consisting of a master bedroom suite, two guest bedrooms, hot-tub room, and open sleeping loft. The original cabin was renovated by removing the existing bedroom and bathroom. This opened the interior spaces for a new kitchen and dining area. The design of the addition is compatible with the scale and character of the original cabin without mimicking its log construction. The new work was higher than the original cabin so it was built into the gently sloping grade which was then bermed at the front facade. Further work included a sympathetic garage near the cabin and a gazebo in the open yard area. |
