East Wing Restoration

Work on the reconstruction of the entire east service wing of offices, which had been largely demolished in the 1830’s, extended over several years from 2000 to 2009. This work involved the consolidation of those portions of masonry which had survived together with the re-erection of the missing walls, piers and Jefferson’s uniquely designed serrated roof with its terrace deck. Based on archeological evidence, the kitchen fireplace, oven, set kettle (for heating hot water) as well as the original stew stove with three charcoal burners was reconstructed.
