Period: 1700

National Historic Landmark

Christopher Wren

MCWB was asked to design a permanent ramp for the south end of the Wren building. In the schematic and design development phases, MCWB worked with the Director of the Historic Campus, securing approvals from the President, the Code Review Team, the Design Review Team, and the Virginia Department of Historic Resources. To provide the required clearance, the 1930's Colonial-style door and frame was re-designed; preserving their historic character, while maintaining the extant masonry opening. The ramp was designed in a modern idiom, readily distinguished from the historic building, but related to it through the selection and deployment of historic materials.
